CHARLWOOD FRIENDS
On 5th June, several members of Charlwood Friends visited the
caves at Reigate. We were given a guided tour by Lesley, who
proved to be an excellent guide.
The Barons' Cave is one of Britain’s oldest show caves. It is part
of the old Norman castle, which was demolished many years
ago, and remains one of Reigate's oldest surviving medieval
features. The castle was likely constructed by the second Earl of
Surrey, William de Warrenne, shortly after 1088. Reigate ‘Caves’
comprise two sets of mined tunnels, initially created for the
extraction of silver sand, primarily used in glassmaking. The East
Mine later served as a munitions store during World War I, a
storage facility for beer and wine, and a control centre during
World War II. Similarly, the West Mine was used for storing wine
and beer and acted as an air-raid shelter during World War II.
It was an enjoyable evening. If anyone would like to join Charlwood Friends, please contact
Sue at: suebloom@charlwoodgreen.co.uk.
