History
The John Bristow Thomas Mason Trust has been in existence for many years - John Bristow in 1637 and
Thomas Mason in 1926. These two men each had a vision to leave something for the Parish of Charlwood
which at that time included IÞeld and Hookwood when their charities were set up.
The charities were joined in 1999 as both had similar objectives, and local trustees had a desire to carry
on the good works. Here we are in June 2025, and the Trustees are still enthusiastic and committed to
carrying out the objectives of the JB&TM Trust.
The Objectives:
Education We can provide grants for tuition and cost of living fees for college, university and adult education
courses. We are delighted to mention that three local students who have received education grants have gone
on to earn First Class Honours Degrees. We also support a range of activities at Charlwood Primary School.
Welfare We can provide grants for the relief of people and families who are in need, hardship, distress
or have health-related issues. These are handled with anonymity, care and compassion. Our aim is to
simply help in the most efÞcient way we can.
Recreation The Trust aims to improve the conditions of life, recreation facilities and leisure activities of
the residents. We provide grants for Tea & Chat, Venture Week, Hookwood Memorial Hall, Charlwood
Parish Hall, St Nicholas’ mowing, the clogging group and various one-off events.
Restoration We offer support to other charities that beneÞt the residents of Charlwood & Hookwood. The
Trust recently provided the salary costs for a Clinical Nurse Specialist at St Catherine’s Hospice as many
people in our communities receive care there.
The Trustees Lizzy Daly (Chair), Bjorn Harris, Matthew Hill, Nick Howarth, Revd Sue Lepp, Richard Parker,
Chris Peters (Treasurer), Dawn Traynor.
